The 2014/15 cricket season just keeps getting bigger for the Negie.

Our 1st and 2nd XIs were successful in their semi-finals last week and are off to the ‘Big Dance’ this Saturday in a four-day match over two weekends with both teams at Princes Park, South Caulfield.

The 4th XI is playing its semi-final away at Holland Park in Kensington and Sunday B grade play at DW Lucas Oval, East Malvern.

Training Tonight

Training is on again tonight and there are plenty of spots up for grabs; there is every chance there could be a few changes in each team so come along and train hard. John Young’s partner, Tori, will be providing a meal for us (at just $5 per head) and it is sure to be delicious.

MATCH REPORTS

1ST XI
The 1st XI were at Murrumbeena Park’s Peter Robertson oval against top placed Murrumbeena CC. Skipper, Aaron Fenton lost the toss and was asked to bowl. The ‘Beena got off to a solid start with 0/30 of the first 10 overs but the ‘Negie pressure was maintained and Regan “Lionheart” Buckley reaped the rewards by removing both openers in quick succession. A bit of a partnership ensued before Al Patey got the next wicket LBW. After that, the ‘Beena middle order fell apart with two more wickets to Buckley and a handy one to Raj Bala.

Our UK paceman Kieran New got into the act by removing the team skipper shortly before afternoon tea to have Beena in all sorts at 7/89. They offered little resistance to be bowled out for 105 after just 42 overs, with Kieran claiming another two scalps. Buckley finished with superb figures of 5/35 from his 18 overs bowled and New took 3/28.

‘Negie skipper Fenton was in no mood to make hard work of the run chase and got us off to a flying start and at 1/74 Beena had lost all hope. A couple of quick wickets perked them up though and at 3/76 it was game on. Brilliant bat Danny Davies was the steady hand in all this and Andrew Morrissey was the runmaker, scoring a quick fire 22 to get us to 5/102. Another wicket and we were 6/104 and a few nervous moments were soon settled with the “Lionheart” Buckley again leading the charge for us to finish day one at 6/138.

We retuned to Beena the next day to finish the job and with a massive ‘Negie crowd to cheer them home ‘Beena conceded defeat after we were bowled out for 235. Danny Davies took over on day two and finished the innings at 97no in a great display of attacking batting.

2nd XI
The 2nd XI headed to Beaumaris for their semi-final after Beauy just got past us on the ladder in the last game of the home and away season. Glenn “Murf” Murphy lost the toss and was asked to bowl. On a great pitch with an even cover of grass the Beaui openers looked solid, getting to 0/40 after 12 overs, and it was looking like being a long day in the field for the ‘Negie boys.

However, the game soon changed. Murf got the breakthrough with a fine catch from Rohan Storey in close. When Lukey Meyer took the top of off stump of Beauy’s no 3 batsmen we got on a roll to have them 6/62 after 25 overs. The Beauy skipper came out and then proceeded to dispatch the ball to all parts of the boundary for a quick fire 35 to get them back on track.

Christian Hollingworth saved the day by sneaking a quicker one past him to clip the leg stump. With only one experienced Beauy batsmen left to guide them to some sort of score, Murf and Lukey cleaned up the tail to have the opposition all out for 132 shortly after the tea break. Murf finished with 5/49 off 18 overs and Lukey 4/16 off 12.

Anuj Phogat and Rohan Storey then opened the batting for Carnegie and in a fine display got us to the last over of the day at 0/128, with Rohan making 44 and Anuj 74no. We lost a couple of wickets in the last over going for the first innings lead with the winning run coming of the last ball of the day. Beauy conceded that taking 18 wickets the following day was too big a task so the 2nd XI were free to watch the 1s destroy the ‘Beena on Sunday.

3rd XI
The Threes were at home against Eastern Flow CC last Saturday on a wet wicket at Lord Reserve. After a delayed start, we were sent in to bat and found ourselves at 4/43 before Craig Stobbie and Kris Srikanth settled things down, scoring 36 and 20 respectively. Our tail didn’t wag though and were bowled out for 102 off 31 overs.

The bowling attack was stoic in their defence, reducing the opposition to 7/90 before Eastern Flow’s late order bats steadied and got the job done. Ash Pandey got 2/26 and our skipper, Sunny Bambi, picked up 4/23 off 9 overs. Well done to all the players who played in this team on a competitive season played in great spirit.

4th XI
With no game at Koornang Park last weekend, the 4ths got the chance to play on our main oval. We bowled first and the Singh brothers got us off to a good start before Harry Rennick bowled a fine spell to finish 9 overs, two maidens, 1/19. The skipper, Dave Goodey, brought himself into the attack and cleaned up the tail with Steve “Old man River” Yeats. Dave continued his fine season to claim 4/12 off seven overs and Yeatsy took 2/5 off three overs. Sacred Heart was all out for 84.

After a few early wickets we settled into the batting and were never really challenged. Tony Gabbert made 29 and Ben Lucas ended up with 45.

Sunday A
The A grade went into their Labour Day Monday match against South Yarra with the strongest line up of the season and took full advantage batting first on a pacey but low bouncing KP wicket. We made 193 from our 55 overs with Vinay Tripathi scoring a fine 54 and Pete Cassidy 35. One particular highlight was mild-mannered offie Ash Chawla smoting a huge six over long off at the end of the innings, much to the delight of the crowd.

South Yarra was never in the hunt in their run chase and we bowled them out for 101 with 10 overs to spare. One of those very rare events – a hat trick – was claimed by our star, Vinay Tripathi, who finished with the outstanding figures of 11 overs, three maidens, 6/14.

Sunday B
In a must-win match to qualify for finals, the B grade were at Fawkner Park against Power House. Skipper for the day, Niraj Edwards, won the toss and sent them in. With great firepower at his disposal, Edwards kept a ring field and eager catchers in the slips and we got them all out cheaply for 101 off 37 overs. Glenn “GC” Cartledge was the pick of the bowlers with 4/11 off 9 overs with 6 maidens and Davor Stanic getting 3/14.

We didn’t muck around with the batting and Karam Singh made light work of it with a rapid and often brutal 68 to help us pass the total with just two wickets down within 20 overs. The win was enough to sew up fourth spot on the ladder.

Under 15
Day two of our home semi against Murrumbeena saw us with a faint hope of fighting back into the game after we were bowled out for 31 on day 1 and ‘Beena were 4/71 overnight. After taking a while to get the first wicket, we eventually rolled them with seven overs left in the day for 145. Josh Meyer and Tim Oaten got three wickets each for the good guys.

We then had another hit and in a bit of fun scored 56 off the seven overs we faced. It was a great season for the U15s. We had a combined team with Washington Park CC and also included a player from Mackie CC to help us with the numbers. Despite a few nerves before round 1, the team gelled beautifully and each player got a lot from the season. There are a few players to watch out for in the seniors next year with Tom Robinson and Liam Corbett making their debut this season and some solid knocks from Josh Meyer.

Selection Meal This Week

With a big selection night tomorrow with the finals teams being announced for the first and seconds and also the last home & away round for the MCA sides, where better to do this than our club sponsor Del Mar.

We all head around en masse at 7.30pm for a meal and some cold beverages, the link to the menu is below.

Teams will be anounced and a general rev up for the biggest round of the year so far, all players are required to attend.

Feel free to bring your wives/partners or kids as this is a family friendly venue with a little kids play ground.

Carnegie Cricket Clubs famous raffle is on again this Sunday the 15th of Feb. The day kicks off at 12pm with the bar open and the B-Sunday playing out in the middle of Koornang Park in a one day game. The dress up theme is your best 80’s gear so dust off those old clothes or your parents clothes Alan Patey. There will be a prize on the day for best costume. The day will finish with the big raffle draw. Stuey’s famous meat will be served all day on the spit. Only $50 per ticket, with less than 50 tickets remaining get yours at the club tonight, Saturday and if there are any left…on the day.

Seniors

As the finals get closer, each game gets more and more important. Just four weeks until finals actions starts at the Neg.

Saturday

The First XI has a must win game away against Murrumbeena, Cristian Hollingworth gets his first chance in the one’s lets hope he does well. Raj Bala is out again with general soreness and is looking the resume via the 3rd XI.

The seconds will be keen to bounce back from a loss to Mentone last week and are at home to Murrumbeena. Dave “The Model” Goodey has been promoted after his big ton in the 4th’s and Pete Scoulidis get his first run in the seconds. Where Dave goes so does Gemma, the 2nd’s officially have a team manager this week, looking forward to a great arvo tea!

The thirds are at Lord vs Melbourne City, note this is a one day game starting at 12.30pm. Srikanth back in after a 3 month trip to India.

The fourth XI are stepping back in time with Steve “Old Man River” Yeats taking charge, they are also playing Melbourne City. Josh Meyer comes in for his first game of senior cricket due to his baseball committments. The Pres Patrick O’Shannessy also takes to the field after an extended lay off with Ebola, Pat picked this up in the jungles of South America.

Sunday

The A grade are away vs Burnley, many great battles between these two sides over the years. Another new skipper this game Niraj Edwards, this team has had more skippers than Tim Dodgson has had Big Mac’s. Looking at the team list one would be excused for thinking we were rolling out the English national team.

The B Sunday are at Koornang vs EMT, MG Dodgson is vs sort of his old club (well half of it anyway) i’m sure he will be keen to notch up a win here. Some pretty decent inclusions also with Mayank,Raj,Sid all coming into the line up.

Also well done to the selection panel as i know there are many players missing with all the world cup matches starting next week.
