GF Finals & PF Final Match Reports

Our onfield season officially came to a close two Sundays ago with a grand final victory for the 2nd XI and a heart wrenching loss 10 minutes after the 2nd XI win for the 1st XI. The 4ths also played in their preliminary final on Saturday and came off second best against Sacred Heart. See the match reports below:

MATCH REPORTS:

1st XI

The 1st XI headed into day 3 of their grand final against Old Mentonians with a 50 run lead and Old Mentone on 0/3. On the best batting pitch most players had ever seen and it was going to be a toil and effort to get wickets. But that all changed when we picked up 3 early wickets to have Old Mentone looking very shaky at 3/37 early on. The Mentonian middle order dug in though and got to afternoon tea without losing another and adding 150 runs. Skipper, Aaron Fenton, brought himself on and got the breakthrough. As the afternoon went on, old Mentone upped the run rate and lost their last 3 wickets all run out with 10 overs left in the day. Along with Fenno, Al Patey got an LBW, Bimal Shah got 1 wicket, Regan Buckley got 2 and the pick of the bowlers was Kieran New with 3 to his name. We had to bat out the last part of the day and we looked steady with Tarun Rabari and Fenno at the crease before Fenno was bowled. Kieran came out as night watchman and we went into day 4 at 1/10 with 166 to take the win or bat out the day to win the flag. Kieran and Tarun got us of to a solid start in near perfect conditions on day 4 by seeing of the opening bowlers when Kieran fell just before the drinks break. Danny Davies joined Tarun and it was all going smoothly at 2/50 odd. Danny went out after getting his eye in but Tarun was looking solid, keeping up a steady scoring pace. Our middle order failed to fire though and we lost a spate of wickets and when we lost Tarun on 43 we went into the afternoon tea break at 8 wickets down with Regan and Al at the crease. The break was good for the pair and both were determined to finish the job. They got through the first part and almost made it through to the drinks before Al mistimed a shot and was caught at cover. It came down to Bimal Shah and Regan Buckley for a last wicket stand. In controversial circumstances, Old Mentonians brought their gun fast bowler onto the field for the first time on day four with less than 15 overs remaining in the match after he had been playing in a football game. Despite Fenno’s queries and protests to the umpires, he was allowed to bowl. Regan and Bimal were holding strong, negotiating each ball with ultra care. There were seven overs left for the match and a hush around the oval. Bimal was on strike and got struck on the pad with mad appeals from all fielders. The umpire stayed steady, gave it an eternal amount of thought, before finally pointing to the sky and dashing Carnegie’s 1st XI premiership hopes.

2nd XI

The 2nd XI resumed their battle on day 3 after a tough finish to the week before and the game in the balance again. We were 5/65 and holding a 133 run lead from the first inning. Stuart Easton wasted no time and got the runs flowing quickly before missing a drive and having his off stump removed after a quick fire 12. Luke Meyer joined Christian Hollingworth who was 43no from the previous week. They played carefully and successfully made it through to drinks. As the day went on the conditions got easier to bat and the runs flowed and we went to tea without further loss and the score at 6/150 (215 run lead) and Christian in the 90s. They picked up where they left off after tea and Christian brought up his century in fine style and our lead extending well above 250. More aggressive batting was the order of the day with the new ball due before drinks. As the lead got closer to 300, the Mentone Tigers finally got their new ball and with immediate effect had Christian dropped and then caught the very next ball at first slip to for an excellent 126. Lukey continued but was dismissed for 47 a few overs later. The tail wagged and Glenn Murphy got a valuable 17 at number 11 which included 3 boundaries before we were all out with about 15 overs left in the day. The left handed Mentone skipper opened the batting and went on the attack before having his leg stump knocked by a Louie Turpie inswinger (for the 3rd time this season) and we were up and about. The other Mentone opener continued to attack though and the runs came easily for him. Tim Dodgson cam in and removed him LBW (for the second time in the match) and we came close to having Mentone 3 down before the close of play with a couple of missed chances. Day 4 – we needed 8 wickets and Mentone needed 266 runs. Spin was used right from the start with Christian Hollingworth taking the first over and Murph toiled from the other end. It took a while to get the first wicket with the Mentone batsmen taking their chances with plenty of french cuts to get them to 92 before a great captain’s catch at mid off down low by Murph off Tim’s bowling. After drinks we got a few more wickets and Mentone got a few more runs and afternoon tea score of 5/156 and Mentone still needing 160+ off 37 overs and their highest run scorer for the innings not out after being dropped several times. After tea we brought Matt Bayliss into the attack and was looking likely to get a wicket and making it difficult for batsmen to score. The Mentone boys had plenty to play for and took him on. Christian finally dismissed the main batsman thanks to Matt Bayliss holding a catch at backward square. Matt Bayliss got the next 2 and we were into the tail enders with the score at 8/203 thanks to a great outfield catch from Stuart Easton under pressure from the Mentone fans in the deep. Mentone were not done though and went on the attack needing 6+ runs per over for any hope of victory. Christian got an LBW and the Mentone number 11 came out and went whack! 3 boundaries and the 10th wicket partnership had already reached 24 in a couple of overs, we had three fielders in the deep and the balls were sailing over there heads. Christian was the man and bowled him after playing over a full ball to get us the win and the man of the match award to add 4 wickets to his 126 with the bat!

4th XI

Whilst there was action a plenty at Princes Park, the 4ths were at Koornang Park on Saturday in their do or die preliminary final against Sacred Heart. We started well by getting 2 early wickets but with plenty of short stuff the runs were flowing. The Sacred Heart batsmen attacked all game and we dismissed them for 203 with the Skipper, Dave Goodey, getting another 4 fa. Our turn to bat saw us in trouble early before steadying but with another glut of wickets and we were all out for 69 and the 4thXI’s season was over.

It was great to see all the support at the grounds over the 2 weekends and a really big crowd back at the rooms on Sunday afternoon for match reports.

Stay tuned for announcements about the Presentation Night

MATCH REPORTS

1ST XI
The 1st XI were at Murrumbeena Park’s Peter Robertson oval against top placed Murrumbeena CC. Skipper, Aaron Fenton lost the toss and was asked to bowl. The ‘Beena got off to a solid start with 0/30 of the first 10 overs but the ‘Negie pressure was maintained and Regan “Lionheart” Buckley reaped the rewards by removing both openers in quick succession. A bit of a partnership ensued before Al Patey got the next wicket LBW. After that, the ‘Beena middle order fell apart with two more wickets to Buckley and a handy one to Raj Bala.

Our UK paceman Kieran New got into the act by removing the team skipper shortly before afternoon tea to have Beena in all sorts at 7/89. They offered little resistance to be bowled out for 105 after just 42 overs, with Kieran claiming another two scalps. Buckley finished with superb figures of 5/35 from his 18 overs bowled and New took 3/28.

‘Negie skipper Fenton was in no mood to make hard work of the run chase and got us off to a flying start and at 1/74 Beena had lost all hope. A couple of quick wickets perked them up though and at 3/76 it was game on. Brilliant bat Danny Davies was the steady hand in all this and Andrew Morrissey was the runmaker, scoring a quick fire 22 to get us to 5/102. Another wicket and we were 6/104 and a few nervous moments were soon settled with the “Lionheart” Buckley again leading the charge for us to finish day one at 6/138.

We retuned to Beena the next day to finish the job and with a massive ‘Negie crowd to cheer them home ‘Beena conceded defeat after we were bowled out for 235. Danny Davies took over on day two and finished the innings at 97no in a great display of attacking batting.

2nd XI
The 2nd XI headed to Beaumaris for their semi-final after Beauy just got past us on the ladder in the last game of the home and away season. Glenn “Murf” Murphy lost the toss and was asked to bowl. On a great pitch with an even cover of grass the Beaui openers looked solid, getting to 0/40 after 12 overs, and it was looking like being a long day in the field for the ‘Negie boys.

However, the game soon changed. Murf got the breakthrough with a fine catch from Rohan Storey in close. When Lukey Meyer took the top of off stump of Beauy’s no 3 batsmen we got on a roll to have them 6/62 after 25 overs. The Beauy skipper came out and then proceeded to dispatch the ball to all parts of the boundary for a quick fire 35 to get them back on track.

Christian Hollingworth saved the day by sneaking a quicker one past him to clip the leg stump. With only one experienced Beauy batsmen left to guide them to some sort of score, Murf and Lukey cleaned up the tail to have the opposition all out for 132 shortly after the tea break. Murf finished with 5/49 off 18 overs and Lukey 4/16 off 12.

Anuj Phogat and Rohan Storey then opened the batting for Carnegie and in a fine display got us to the last over of the day at 0/128, with Rohan making 44 and Anuj 74no. We lost a couple of wickets in the last over going for the first innings lead with the winning run coming of the last ball of the day. Beauy conceded that taking 18 wickets the following day was too big a task so the 2nd XI were free to watch the 1s destroy the ‘Beena on Sunday.

3rd XI
The Threes were at home against Eastern Flow CC last Saturday on a wet wicket at Lord Reserve. After a delayed start, we were sent in to bat and found ourselves at 4/43 before Craig Stobbie and Kris Srikanth settled things down, scoring 36 and 20 respectively. Our tail didn’t wag though and were bowled out for 102 off 31 overs.

The bowling attack was stoic in their defence, reducing the opposition to 7/90 before Eastern Flow’s late order bats steadied and got the job done. Ash Pandey got 2/26 and our skipper, Sunny Bambi, picked up 4/23 off 9 overs. Well done to all the players who played in this team on a competitive season played in great spirit.

4th XI
With no game at Koornang Park last weekend, the 4ths got the chance to play on our main oval. We bowled first and the Singh brothers got us off to a good start before Harry Rennick bowled a fine spell to finish 9 overs, two maidens, 1/19. The skipper, Dave Goodey, brought himself into the attack and cleaned up the tail with Steve “Old man River” Yeats. Dave continued his fine season to claim 4/12 off seven overs and Yeatsy took 2/5 off three overs. Sacred Heart was all out for 84.

After a few early wickets we settled into the batting and were never really challenged. Tony Gabbert made 29 and Ben Lucas ended up with 45.

Sunday A
The A grade went into their Labour Day Monday match against South Yarra with the strongest line up of the season and took full advantage batting first on a pacey but low bouncing KP wicket. We made 193 from our 55 overs with Vinay Tripathi scoring a fine 54 and Pete Cassidy 35. One particular highlight was mild-mannered offie Ash Chawla smoting a huge six over long off at the end of the innings, much to the delight of the crowd.

South Yarra was never in the hunt in their run chase and we bowled them out for 101 with 10 overs to spare. One of those very rare events – a hat trick – was claimed by our star, Vinay Tripathi, who finished with the outstanding figures of 11 overs, three maidens, 6/14.

Sunday B
In a must-win match to qualify for finals, the B grade were at Fawkner Park against Power House. Skipper for the day, Niraj Edwards, won the toss and sent them in. With great firepower at his disposal, Edwards kept a ring field and eager catchers in the slips and we got them all out cheaply for 101 off 37 overs. Glenn “GC” Cartledge was the pick of the bowlers with 4/11 off 9 overs with 6 maidens and Davor Stanic getting 3/14.

We didn’t muck around with the batting and Karam Singh made light work of it with a rapid and often brutal 68 to help us pass the total with just two wickets down within 20 overs. The win was enough to sew up fourth spot on the ladder.

Under 15
Day two of our home semi against Murrumbeena saw us with a faint hope of fighting back into the game after we were bowled out for 31 on day 1 and ‘Beena were 4/71 overnight. After taking a while to get the first wicket, we eventually rolled them with seven overs left in the day for 145. Josh Meyer and Tim Oaten got three wickets each for the good guys.

We then had another hit and in a bit of fun scored 56 off the seven overs we faced. It was a great season for the U15s. We had a combined team with Washington Park CC and also included a player from Mackie CC to help us with the numbers. Despite a few nerves before round 1, the team gelled beautifully and each player got a lot from the season. There are a few players to watch out for in the seniors next year with Tom Robinson and Liam Corbett making their debut this season and some solid knocks from Josh Meyer.

All the best and good luck to all teams playing this weekend.

Finals Start This Weekend

What a big weekend of cricket it is going to be!

It’s been a massive week of cricket at Carnegie and it keeps getting bigger with finals starting for the 1st AND 2nd XI teams. The 3rds & 4ths and Sunday A & B have their final home away match this week and the U15s are scrapping to keep their season alive in their semi-final battle with Murrumbeena at Packer Park on Friday.

The 1sts successfully defended 248 against Brighton District last Saturday with Danny Davies taking 4 wickets to help the team knock them over for 130, we finished 4th on the ladder. This week we face cross town rivals in Murrumbeena in a sudden death semi final at the Beena. Raj Bala is back in from his general soreness.

The 2nds chased down 135 against Brighton District at Dendy Park last Saturday, with Louie Turpie scoring 53, and both Murphy and BBQ Tong with 3 wickets each, we finished 3rd on the ladder. This week we face Beaumaris @ Beaumaris Reserve in a sudden death Semi Final, we have played Beaumaris twice this season with one win and one narrow loss. Dave “Iron Gloves” Morrissey, Tim “MG” Dodgson and Luke Meyer come into the line up.

With the 1s and 2s away it gives the Saturday 4th XI a chance to strut their stuff on Koornang Park against Reds. A win will mean a home semi final the following week. They had a washout against the top placed team last week. Dave “the model” Goodey looks to almost have his finals team on the park this week. The team manager mentioned last night that she will be at KP 3 days this week, what a supporter.

The 3rd XI are at Lords against Eastern Flow and after a win last week against Parkville Districts, the boys will be keen to finish the season on a high note. It will be a long day with the match starting at 11AM!!! Josh Meyer with the big promotion, nearly got to play seniors with his old man, oh well next year.

Sunday B grade are against Power House at Faulkner Park and will be looking for a win to guarantee finals. A washout last Sunday meant they missed a chance to knock off East Malvern Tooronga. Niraj “the natural” Edwards will be at the helm and M Bayliss also having a hit.

Sunday A grade have their match on Monday against South Yarra and will also be looking to finish on a high with the good chance of a strong crowd at Koornang Park. We have a really strong team on the park and they will be looking to cause likely finalist South Yarra some pain.

It was a massive day last Sunday with the whole of club photo in the grandstand and a good time had by all. Thanks to all those who attended. Milo in2CRICKET completed their season with Aidan OShannessey doing a fine job leading the chargers. We will get some picture up online and on the app soon.

The U11 & U13 Junior Teams and T20 BLAST also finished up over the weekend and congratulations goes out to all involved, especially players, coaches and team managers on a very successful season.

For all teams good luck for the weekend and for the players taking to the ground in finals for this proud club do your best, you have been selected as the best players for your team.
